The Destination in Focus this week is Shenzhen. Shenzhen is a city in South China, located in the Pearl River Delta, in Guangdong province. It has a population of about 23,3 million inhabitants (2018) and an area of 2 050 km². Located north of Hong Kong, it has the second largest container port in China after Shanghai.
Shenzhen is often perceived as a metropolis linking Hong Kong to mainland China. By the 1970s, Shenzhen was just a small fishing village, but it quickly changed after the city became a special economic zone. This is the beginning of a major development, which is now considered the technological capital of China. It is a great manufacturing center and home to China’s most successful Hi-Tech Companies, amongst them BYD, Huawei, Tencent, and ZTE.
Shenzhen ranks twenty in the Global Cities Index of Schroders.
